This article highlights the progress of life expectancy in the World in the last forty years and how this positive impact is bringing a new public health issue, an increase in the number of years that people are living with disabilities. An interactive data visualization using three key indicators estimated by GBS 2010: 1) Life Expectancy; 2) Healthy-Adjusted Life Expectancy; and 3) Healthy Years Lost, defined as the difference between health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE) and life expectancy is featured to encourage exploration and analysis from readers.

Fungal Meningitis Outbreak in US, 2012

On September 18, 2012, the Tennessee Department of Health was alerted by a clinician regarding a patient with culture-confirmed Aspergillus fumigatus meningitis diagnosed 46 days after epidural steroid injection at a Tennessee ambulatory surgical center. This date marked the begin of an outbreAk of Fungal Meningitis in US that spread suddenly to some states of the country.

A data visualizations to help describing the spread of this outbreak including cases, deaths and health facilities that received contaminated steroid injections is featured.

An strong earthquake was felt in Washington Metropolitan Area this Tuesday August 23rd, 2011. According to reports, it was felt in most of the Mid Atlantic coast from South Carolina to Massachusetts.

A data visualization of the Virginia Earthquake 2011 is presented below. A dashboard including three views dynamically linked, two maps illustrating the location of the earthquake and aftershocks, and a time line chart that presents the moment in which the earthquake and aftershocks occurred.
