My talk at the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Workshop on Big Data and Scientific Computation

on Wed, 09/09/2015 - 02:48

I was invited to participate in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Workshop on Big Data and Scientific Computation, where the systematic approach and science behind the GBD Study, the computational modeling and data flow, the use of software CODEm and Dismod 2.0, technological infrastructure and data visualization platform were discussed.

The workshop was hold at the ICICT-FIOCRUZ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 23 to 27 August, 2015 and hosted by the Ministry of Health of Brazil, Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), University of Washington, the Institute of Communication, Scientific and Technological Information in Health (ICICT-FIOCRUZ) and the Public Health Post Graduate Program from Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG)

I talked about data visualization in public health including an introduction to the concept of data visualization, brief information about the relevance of visual perception principles and rules to create effective data visualizations, and the key role of data visualization to communicate and lead to understanding. The cycle of visual analytics and a set of data visualization tools were also introduced. The Public Health Information and Data Visualization Platform implemented in the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Data Visualization Platform from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) were demonstrated.

Take a look at my presentation below.
