Exploring Population Trends from 1950 to 2100

on Sun, 05/08/2016 - 02:32

I was curious about how the population is growing in the World. The good news is that the United Nation Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) produces every two years the World Population Prospects (WPP), with relevant demographic indicators. I visited UN DESA WWP data download center and downloaded the annual population by sex and age groups data file [zip file 15 MB].

I used Tableau, my visual analytic tool of preference to 1) explore the data set and answer my fundamental questions; 2) produce an interactive data visualization that allow you to explore the data by yourself.

The visualization initially shows the population trends in the World in two panels. Top panel shows total population and bottom panel shows the proportion or percentage of population by broad age groups respect total population. Use the selection control located at the top-right corner of the visualization to select a continent, region or country.

I hope this visualization is useful for you to learn about the population trends worldwide, or in selected region, or country.
