Deaths Due to Injury by Firearms in the US, 2013

on Sat, 10/03/2015 - 08:26

Over 10 Americans per 100,000 population died in 2013 (more than 30 thousand people) due to injury caused by firearms. This rate varies across states from Hawaii, with the best situation where over 2 people per 100,000 population died from this cause, to Alaska, with the higher mortality, 19.8 per 100,000 population. Based on data, 31 states had a mortality rate higher than the national average of 10.4 (x 100,000 pop) in 2013.

Deaths attributable to firearms are preventable by implementing public policies on gun control. Limiting access to guns reduces deaths due to injury from firearms.

You may have seen this one by the Guardian about the gun control laws in place by state: http://www.theguardian.com/world/interactive/2013/jan/15/gun-laws-united...
It would be an interesting project to see how the two data sets relate.
